MANEKIN CONSTRUCTION COMPLETES ARNOLD SAFEWAY
Manekin Construction LLC has completed construction on a new Safeway store, which is now open at 1451 Governor Ritchie Highway in Arnold, Md.
Manekin Construction demolished a former Safeway on site and then began building a new store surface and underground parking. Designed by Freeman & Morgan Architects, the new Arnold Safeway is 53,000 square feet (more than two-and-one-half times larger than the previous store) and features the company’s latest lifestyle décor and format which emphasizes the company’s high-quality perishable offerings.
It features a full-service deli (including separate olive and salad bars, along with a substantial selection of prepared foods and cheeses); full-service bakery with hearth oven; natural foods; floral center; fresh seafood department; service meat department, and organic produce. Additional amenities include a Starbucks coffee bar, Bergmann's Dry Cleaners and an in-store SunTrust Bank branch. Customers can park in front of the store or in the garage underneath.
Mahogany and other natural materials are prevalent throughout the service departments, and kiosks replace the traditional counter areas found in Safeway stores. Recessed incandescent and halogen lighting establish a warm atmosphere and direct attention to the merchandise within each department.
“In order for the store to open before Thanksgiving, we trimmed two-and-half months off the production schedule,” said Craig Wess, president of Manekin Construction. “It was a team effort that required many of our subcontractors to work double shifts.”
“The site work actually came together during the last week of the job, during which time Safeway was hard at work stocking products on the shelves,” Wess added.
Earlier this year, Manekin Construction completed a 52,644-square-foot Safeway in Kensington, Md. The firm previously built a 58,860-square-foot Safeway on Kent Island.
Manekin’s grocery portfolio also includes the recent completion of two new Shoppers Food Warehouse stores in Baltimore City and Lanham, as well as the conversion of eight stores for Shoppers. Additionally, the firm has built eight grocery-anchored retail centers and two additional supermarkets in Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick and Prince George’s counties and Baltimore City. It also renovated the Whole Foods Market in Baltimore’s Mt. Washington community and built Klein’s Supermarket in Jacksonville, Md.
